How to Contact Your Legislators

  Meeting with Your Legislators

There is no better way to make your position known on an issue than meeting with legislators face-to-face. NJBIA's Site Visits and Employer Legislative Committee (ELC) meetings provide excellent venues for voicing your opinion of legislation. Meeting legislators at their offices is another good way to meet and talk with them. Some tips to consider when setting up a visit with your legislator:
  1. Make the appointment in advance. Request meetings with legislators well in advance of the date you would like to meet them. Call their office a few days before the meeting to verify your appointment-legislator's schedules can change at the last minute.
  2. Include the appropriate staff. It is sometimes impossible to meet directly with your elected official because of scheduling conflicts. Meeting with the legislative aide in that office can be just as important, because you can establish a relationship with the person who has the legislator's ear.
  3. Be Prompt. Being on time for the meeting shows that you not only think the meeting is important, but that the legislator's time is valuable as well. Remember to be patient if you are kept waiting for a while.
  4. Have an agenda prepared. Be concise, direct and constructive.
  5. Use NJBIA as a resource. We can provide you with talking points and handouts on specific issues.
  6. Always say thank you.
  7. Don't forget to follow up. A thank you note is always appreciated.
